Thoughtful home modifications can make daily activities easier, reduce fall hazards, and help an older adult remain independent. Start with the person's current mobility, vision, balance, and caregiving needs rather than purchasing equipment first. An occupational therapist or qualified home-safety professional can help identify changes that fit the individual and the home.
QUICK SAFETY CHECK
• Remove or secure loose rugs and keep walkways clear of cords and clutter.
• Improve lighting in hallways, bathrooms, entrances, and at the top and bottom of stairs.
• Add secure handrails on stairs and grab bars near toilets and inside and outside the tub or shower.
• Use nonslip surfaces where floors may become wet.
• Keep frequently used items within easy reach.
• Check that chairs, beds, and toilets are at a safe height for standing and sitting.
MODIFICATIONS TO CONSIDER
• Step-free entry or a properly designed ramp with handrails.
• Lever-style door handles and easier-to-use faucets.
• Wider, unobstructed pathways for a walker or wheelchair.
• A walk-in or roll-in shower, handheld showerhead, shower seat, and appropriate grab bars.
• Motion-activated or automatic night lighting.
• Stair lifts or other major equipment only after an individualized assessment and professional installation.
QUESTIONS TO ASK A CONTRACTOR OR SPECIALIST
• Are you licensed and insured for this type of work?
• Have you completed accessibility projects for older adults or wheelchair users?
• Will you provide a written scope, materials list, price, timeline, warranty, and permit information?
• Who will complete the work, and how will changes affect resale or future care needs?
• Can an occupational therapist review the plan before construction?
