Senior Care Questions for Central Texas Families

Clear answers to common questions about assisted living, memory care, hospital discharge, Medicaid, VA benefits, and senior placement in Austin and Central Texas.

If your mom is missing or in immediate danger, call 911 first. Once she is safe, document what happened and contact her doctor about the change in behavior. I can also help your family compare secured memory-care communities in Austin and Central Texas.

Assisted living may be appropriate when someone needs help with daily activities but can still live safely in a less restrictive setting. Memory care provides added structure, security, and dementia-specific support. The right choice depends on your parent’s memory, judgment, mobility, behaviors, and ability to remain safe.

Ask the discharge planner to explain why returning home is unsafe and what level of care is recommended. Request the therapy notes, medication list, discharge instructions, and care recommendations. I can then help your family compare appropriate assisted-living, memory-care, rehabilitation, or skilled-nursing options.

Some placements can happen within several days, but timing depends on the person’s condition, required care, available rooms, assessment results, and financial arrangements. Starting before the discharge date gives your family more time to compare options instead of choosing under pressure.

Level of care describes how much daily assistance a resident needs. A community may consider help with bathing, dressing, medications, mobility, toileting, transfers, and supervision. Because some communities charge by care level, ask what the advertised price includes and what services cost extra.

ADLs are Activities of Daily Living, including bathing, dressing, eating, toileting, and moving safely. Communities use these activities to understand how much assistance someone needs. A change in ADLs can affect the appropriate care setting, service plan, staffing needs, and monthly cost.

Possibly, but every community has different staffing, equipment, and admission policies. Some assisted-living communities can support a two-person assist or mechanical lift, while others cannot. The community should assess your parent before move-in and explain what would happen if mobility needs increased.

Assisted living supports people who need help with daily activities while maintaining as much independence as possible. A nursing home provides a higher level of nursing and medical support. Diagnoses alone do not determine the right setting; daily care and safety needs matter too.

Respite care is a temporary stay in a senior-living or care setting. Families may use it while a caregiver rests, travels, recovers from illness, or decides whether a community is a good long-term fit. Availability, minimum-stay requirements, and included services vary by community.

Eligible veterans and surviving spouses may receive additional VA pension benefits to help with qualified care expenses. Eligibility depends on service history, care needs, income, assets, and other factors. I can help identify suitable communities and connect your family with qualified benefit resources, but the VA determines eligibility.

Texas Medicaid programs may help eligible residents pay for certain care services in participating assisted-living communities. Medicaid generally does not cover ordinary room-and-board costs. Participation and availability vary, so confirm both program eligibility and whether a particular community accepts the applicable benefit.

Start by identifying what your parent fears losing, such as independence, privacy, control, familiar routines, or connection to home. Avoid presenting the move as a decision already made unless there is an immediate safety or legal reason. Smaller conversations, physician input, community visits, and temporary respite care may make the decision less threatening.

My senior placement assistance does not create an out-of-pocket placement fee for your family. If your loved one moves into a participating community, that community pays my referral fee. I explain this arrangement openly and help your family compare options based on care needs, preferences, location, and budget.

I serve families throughout Travis, Williamson, Hays, and Bastrop Counties. This includes Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Georgetown, Pflugerville, Manor, Buda, Kyle, San Marcos, and nearby communities.

Yes. I provide senior-placement guidance in English and Spanish. I can help Spanish-speaking families understand care options, prepare for tours, compare communities, and discuss the move-in process in the language they are most comfortable using.
